GENERAL ENGLISH COURSES
Develop your English skills and improve your opportunities

Why should you choose us?

We operate over 100 teaching centres throughout the world and we are world leaders in English language teaching.  We have over 50 years of experience and we share the best and latest teaching methodologies through our network of teaching centres.

Who are the teachers?

We only recruit teachers who hold internationally recognised English language teaching qualifications.  Our teachers all have proven experience in teaching foreign students and a clear understanding of the needs of language learners at different ages.

How does the British Council teach English?

Following the latest research into effective language learning, The British Council uses a communicative approach to language teaching, and classes are conducted only in English.  We believe that you will learn English most successfully when classes are interesting, engaging and students participate as much as possible in activities that have communication as their main aim.

We enable you to communicate effectively and confidently in English, whatever your level by:

  • Giving you the language and opportunity to practice expressing yourself in English
  • Giving you classroom activities which reflect how you need to use English in real life situations
  • Helping you to understand how you learn best and showing you how you can learn more effectively from online and other resources
  • Helping you to monitor your progress, identify your strengths and focus your language learning efforts on your weak areas.

How many courses do I need?

Learning a language to a very high level takes time, but your teacher can give you guidance on what level you need to reach for your personal needs.

It is important to start at the right point, so before you join a class, we test your level to ensure that we put you in a class which will challenge and stimulate you but not be too difficult.

Here you can see the classes which we offer at different levels. Please note that our courses correspond to the levels set by the Common European Framework (CEF) for languages.

These are the benchmark levels for languages used throughout Europe. You can take a Cambridge ESOL exam to give you an internationally recognised certificate to prove that you have reached a particular level.

Level testing:

If you are a new student, you will be tested into the most appropriate level for your needs to maximise your learning experience in class.

Course levels:

We offer 6 general levels from beginners to lower advanced. In each level, there are 4 modules to complete.

The courses run two days a week.  Depending on your level, you can choose to study on:
