CELTA is an introductory teacher-training course in teaching English as a foreign language.  It can be taken by people with little or no English-language teaching experience and by people with teaching experience but little or no formal teacher training.

Around the world, CELTA is recognised by many English-language schools and organisations (including the British Council) as the basic qualification for English-language teachers.  It is an essential first qualification for anyone who wishes to have a long-term and international career in English-language teaching.

Candidates on a CELTA course must have a level of spoken and written English that allows them to follow seminars, write assignments and teach practice lessons effectively.  Therefore, we expect candidates to have an English standard that is at least C1 (Advanced) according to the Common European Framework of languages.
More generally, candidates should have a standard of education that would allow them entry to Higher Education in their country.  They should be 20 years old at the beginning of the CELTA course.  (However, candidates of 18 or 19 years old may be allowed to do CELTA if they can demonstrate they have the knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to develop into effective English-language teachers.)

At the moment, it is hoped that British Council Tunis will run two types of CELTA course

•An ‘intensive’, full-time course lasting one month, where candidates would have to spend twenty consecutive week-days in training at British Council Tunis.

•An ‘extensive’, part-time course spread over 19 weeks, involving work on Saturday mornings, Tuesday evenings and Thursday evenings.

Both courses would involve input seminars and teaching practices totalling 120-135 hours. In addition, candidates would be expected to devote 80 additional hours of their own time to the courses, for example, self-studying and writing assignments.  CELTA is extremely demanding and only candidates who can meet these time-requirements should apply.

For these courses to run, they must have a minimum of 10 candidates.  Therefore, British Council Tunis cannot guarantee that the above CELTA courses will take place as scheduled.

To be considered for a CELTA course, you should complete the application form and application tasks carefully and return them to the above email address.  If your application is successful, you will then be invited to a CELTA interview.  The application and interview process are free – candidates only pay money when they accept a place on a definite CELTA course.

Places on the CELTA courses are extremely limited.  Therefore, you are advised to apply as soon as possible.
