About Us

Who we are

The British Council is the United Kingdom's international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations. It is registered in England as a charity and connects people world-wide with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK and builds lasting relationships between the UK and other countries.

The British Council was founded as a voluntary association in 1934 and appointed its first overseas representatives in 1938. It now operates in 216 cities in 110 countries around the world with over 6,000 employees who form an enormous net of information and experience working in conjunction with British institutions.

What we do

Our operations in Trinidad and Tobago opened in 1943.  In 2003, our work supports the present government's objectives of Vision 2020. We work in partnership with the Ministry of Education, The University of the West Indies and the National Library and Information System Authority (NALIS) in supporting educational reform and youth development.

We provide information about education opportunities -- studying in the UK or via distance learning for a UK qualification. We also conduct the IELTS exam on a monthly basis and host other professional/education exams for British universities.

Look out for more information about these and other exciting opportunities and events over the coming months!
