The Future of Localities

Foresight Workshop, London, November 2011

What does the future look like? We see the digital landscape changing around us every day through the introduction of new technologies that mediate our interactions and experiences, but shifts in the physical landscapes and complex systems that shape our communities are harder to see. Through foresight techniques, we can begin to envision how the future will unfold.

To learn more about foresight and how it can help us understand diverse localities, we joined up members of TN2020 with the Clore Social Leadership Programme and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to host a full-day workshop on the development and implementation of foresight strategies in London on 17 November. Forty Clore Social Leadership Fellows and Transatlantic Network 2020 members met others working across a wide range of sectors in the UK and learned about new tools to address issues surrounding the future of localities.

Led by Patrick Harris of the Futures Company, the day opened with the topic of horizon scanning, proposing ways to look beyond normal timeframes and sources, and closed with a presentation on Your Square Mile by Paul Twivy and Jamie Cowen. Throughout the day, the interactive event equipped participants with new ways to create community engagement and collaboration with government and other stakeholders.
