I want to take an Adult course at the British Council. What should I do?
You need to take a placement test before enrolling on any adult course at the British Council. For placement test procedures, please see the placement test page.
What kind of courses are available at the British Council?

General English covers all four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course is divided into five levels from beginner to upper-intermediate.

Special courses in Bangkok centres include Pronunciation, Conversation, Business English, IELTS Preparation, Business Writing, and Academic Writing.

Special courses at Chiang Mai centre include Conversation and IELTS preparation.

All the special courses are available for students who are at pre-intermediate level or above. Please see our course information page on English courses.

Are the teachers native English speakers?
Yes, they are.
What qualifications have your teachers got?
All our teachers are qualified as ESOL/EFL teachers and many of them have additional specialist qualifications.
If I attend the course and I am not able to come to my class occasionally, can I attend a different class of the same level at another time?

Unfortunately not. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, many of the classes are full. Secondly, the classes do not all follow the syllabus in the same sequence.

Finally, as each class develops its own rapport between the students and  the teacher, it is usually not a good idea for a student to come along just for one class.

How can you help me to catch up if I miss a class?
There are no make-up classes. If you would like to know what you missed, you need to ask the teacher or your friends.
How many students per class?
There is a minimum of 8–10 and a maximum of 16–20 students per class depending on each centre. Please check at the centre where you want to study.
How much do I pay to attend courses?

You pay at:

Bangkok centres: the placement test fee is 600 Baht, and courses cost between 4,000-12,300 Baht depending on the course.

Chiang Mai centre: the placement test fee is 350 Baht, and courses cost between 3,300-11,500 Baht depending on the course.

In addition, students need to buy their own course books for between 500 and 800 Baht depending on the course of study.

Will there be any tests during the course?
There will be set assignments during the course to assess how students are progressing and identify areas where they need to improve. Teachers also formally assess students over the eight-week term.
How do you evaluate students at the end of a course?
There will be a test at the end of the course and a counselling session to give advice on areas for development.
Do you fail students?
If a student's attendance is less than 70%, or if the teacher assesses that the student isn't ready to progress, the student may have to repeat the level.
Does the British Council offer an English course for corporate employees?
Yes, we do. You can contact our marketing manager about the best course(s) for your company.
Do you guarantee an IELTS test result if I take the IELTS course with you?
We do not guarantee the test result, but we provide a variety of IELTS preparation courses to meet your requirements.
