In addition to the formal science communication courses offered by some UK universities and colleges, several short training courses and workshops are also available.

University College of London - Popular Writing
This writing course will teach you how to use your words to communicate effectively is one of the most important skills you can have in today's fast moving word of media. If you have a complex technical message to convey to a broad audience, the Popular Writing course will show you how to use the right language, in order to preserve your meaning without confusing your audience with technical terminology. This course runs in July and August 2012, costs and dates can be found here.

British Psychological Society - Media training courses
Two courses are available: An introduction to working with the media, which is designed as an introduction to basic PR and media relations, and Broadcast interview skills, aimed at those who expect to be interviewed by the broadcast media.

Science Communication Unit
Based at the University of the West of England, the Science Communication Unit aims to communicate science to various audiences using innovative means. It offers a series of short science communication workshops, including: 'Science Communication Masterclass' and 'Bespoke Training Portfolio'.

The Royal Society - Science communication workshops
The UK's independent academy of science. It offers one-day communication skills courses and one day media training courses designed exclusively for scientists. These are tutored by journalists and communications professionals, Judith Hann and John Exelby.
