BRITISH COUNCIL IELTS SCHOLARSHIP

The British Council Taipei is now accepting IELTS Scholarship applications for 2013/14. The IELTS Scholarship awards NTD 100,000 to each of five Taiwanese students pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate programme in Fall 2013 or Spring 2014 in a higher education institution in Taiwan or overseas that recognises IELTS as an entry requirement. At least two of the scholarships will be awarded to students who are applying to a university or college in Australia and the United States.

To be eligible, you must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • be a Taiwan citizen
  • begin undergraduate or postgraduate study in Taiwan or overseas in Fall 2013 or Spring 2014
  • attend a higher education institution that accepts IELTS as part of its admission requirements
  • have taken your IELTS test with a British Council IELTS Test Centre in Taiwan
  • have a valid IELTS score (the test must have been taken after 30 June 2011) with a minimum overall band score of 6.5
  • be able to provide an acceptance or offer letter from the higher education institution you are attending by 17 July 2013

Application Procedure:

  • Take an IELTS test with British Council in Taiwan and receive your scores.
  • Download and complete the application form and go through the frequently asked questions (FAQs).
  • Submit your application by 30 June 2013; don’t forget to complete the Selection Task.
  • Fifteen applicants will be short-listed. Short-listed candidates will be notified via email by 10 July 2013.
  • Short-listed applicants will be required to make a presentation on a topic (they will be notified of the topic), followed by a brief interview.
  • The short-listed applicants must supply an acceptance or offer letter from the university they plan to attend prior to 17 July 2013. Failure to submit this letter by the 17 July deadline will result in immediate removal from the short-list.
  • All short-listed applicants will be notified of the final result by email by 31 July 2013.
  • The successful scholarship award applicants will attend an award ceremony in August 2013.

What is British Council IELTS Scholarship?

The British Council has developed the IELTS Scholarship to help more people access an international education. Five applicants planning to attend an undergraduate or postgraduate programme in Taiwan or overseas will each receive a scholarship worth NTD 100,000. Two scholarships are exclusively for students applying to higher education institutions in Australia and the United States. Scholarship payments will be made directly to the higher education institution in order to assist students with their tuition fees.

Who is eligible for the Scholarship?

Essential eligibility criteria are that applicants must:

  • be a Taiwan citizen
  • begin an undergraduate or postgraduate course of study in Taiwan or overseas in Fall 2013 or Spring 2014
  • attend a higher education institution that accepts IELTS as part of its admissions requirements
  • have taken the IELTS test after 30 June 2011
  • have taken the IELTS test with a British Council IELTS Test Centre in Taiwan
  • have a valid IELTS score, with a minimum overall band score of 6.5
  • be able to provide an acceptance or offer letter from their higher education institution by 17 July 2013
  • be able to attend the award ceremony

What is the final date for applications to be received by the British Council?

A completed application must be received by the British Council Taipei by 30 June 2013.

How many scholarships will be awarded?

Five scholarships will be awarded to the value of NTD 100,000 each. Two of the five scholarships will be awarded to recipients going to Australia and the United States.

How do I apply?

  1. 1.Take an IELTS test at a British Council IELTS Test Centre in Taiwan and receive your scores
  2. Download and complete the application form.
  3. Your completed application must reach the British Council Taipei by 30 June 2013
  4. Attach a copy of your latest IELTS Test Report Form along with your completed application
  5. We will short-list fifteen applicants. Short-listed candidates will be notified by email by 10 July 2013
  6. By 17 July 2013, short-listed applicants must supply an acceptance or offer letter from the university they plan to attend
  7. Failure to provide a letter of acceptance or offer by the deadline will result in immediate removal from the short-list
  8. Short-listed applicants will be required to attend an interview by an assessment panel in July 2013
  9. Five applicants will be awarded the scholarships based on their performance during the interview
  10. All short-listed applicants will be notified of the final result by email by 31 July 2013.

I have a disability. Can I still apply?

We will short-list all applicants with a disability provided they meet the essential eligibility criteria. In line with the UK Disability Discrimination Act 1995, we define a person as having a disability if he or she has a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on his or her ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

What is the selection process?

Short-listing will be carried out by a panel of officials from the British Council. The panel will use the written task on the application form for short-listing purposes. Task completion criteria on the application form will also be carefully checked. All applicants with a disability will be automatically short-listed provided they meet the essential eligibility criteria. The final five recipients will be chosen by a panel of Senior Managers and external eminent citizens from the higher education and/or corporate sectors in Taiwan. The panel will decide on the winning scholars based on the interviews.

How will the scholarship be awarded and when?

The scholarship will be disbursed directly to the university you are attending, after the British Council has officially confirmed your status with that university.

What expenses will the scholarship cover?

The award can only be applied toward your tuition fees.

At which universities can the scholarship be used?

Students may use the scholarship for a university that recognises IELTS as part of its admissions in any country. You can search a worldwide list of universities which recognise IELTS at www.takeielts.britishcouncil.org. However, global IELTS recognition is constantly growing. If the university you plan to attend is not listed, we strongly recommend you to contact the university direct for their latest admission requirements.

Can I send an application if I have registered for an IELTS test and have not yet taken it, or if I am currently waiting for my IELTS test results?

No, you can only apply once you have received your IELTS score, and your score must meet the minimum eligibility requirement, which is an overall band score of 6.5.

Can I apply if I am waiting for an acceptance letter from my university?

Yes. Only short-listed applicants need to provide an acceptance or offer letter from the university they plan to attend by 17 July 2013. This university must use IELTS scores to satisfy their English language requirements for admissions.

Can I apply if my IELTS test score is not valid?

No. IELTS scores are valid for two years. You can only apply once you have a valid IELTS score, and your score must meet the minimum eligibility requirement, which is an overall band score of 6.5.

I didn’t take my IELTS test at the British Council or a British Council attached IELTS centre. Can I still apply?

No. As this is a British Council IELTS Scholarship, an essential eligibility criterion is that you must have taken your IELTS test with a British Council Test Centre. Am I eligible for a scholarship even though I already have part-funding through another scholarship or loan scheme?

Yes, you are eligible.

If I receive this scholarship will I be contracted to the British Council Taiwan in some way?

No. There is no individual commitment to the British Council as a successful recipient of the scholarship.

I already have a full tuition scholarship. Am I still eligible to apply?

No, you are not eligible. If you are awarded a full tuition scholarship for 2013 after you have applied for the British Council IELTS Scholarship, please inform us so we can withdraw your application.
