Climate change and tourism

British Council Switzerland and its Swiss partners ran a workshop on 18 and 19 July 2004 for young atmospheric scientists from the UK, Switzerland and Kazakhstan on climate change and tourism.

The second part of the workshop took place on the Jungfraujoch. The mountain, at almost 4,000m in altitude, which is highly sensitive ecologically, caters for up to 5000 tourists per day. It has a world renowned atmospheric research station that the scientists were able to visit. This combination of world class research and tourist infrastructure is unique. In the Jungfraujoch conference room the young scientists gave individual presentations on climate change and tourism. They also went on a behind the scenes tour of both the tourist infrastructure and the research labs. Accompanying the young scientists were Dr Phyllis Starkey MP, HM Ambassador Simon Featherstone, Mark Lynas, a journalist and environmental campaigner and Magi Wechsler, a Swiss political cartoonist. You can see Magi’s cartoons here (1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 ).

The scientists participated in three science cafés on climate change that we organised in Berne, Altdorf and Davos, where for the first time, they were confronted with the challenge of explaining their work to the public. You can see some photos from the science cafés here
