    British Studies Now issue 11

British Studies Now issue 11 is all about action:

  • performance
  • activity
  • interaction

Performance is a complex concept which has been applied to the performing and visual arts and to language. Here we look at the sense in which nations can be performed.

The notion of activity helps us distinguish between different spheres of action and we have chosen to focus on two very different kinds: the physical activity of sport, and activity in the classroom which is being illuminated in new ways by the techniques of Action Research.

In the third and most direct way, we have tried to make this issue of BSN as interactive as possible. You can get in touch with BSN authors direct and follow up new materials, whether they are on the world wide web or in a bookshop. Naomi Clift, who joins the BSN team for the first time this issue, highlights a wealth of resources from the BBC World Service and introduces a classroom activity from Alan Durant of Middlesex University, which you are free to use with your students to examine the idea of Britishness.

Thank you to all our readers who have contributed to the news and calendar pages. We hope that wherever you are teaching you will find something of interest and something of use. Please let us know what you think.
