Whether you are studying English or working for an exam like IELTS, or an English teacher looking for resources and ideas, the English Learning Zone can help you. We offer a wide range of resources and services to support both students and teachers of English, as well as special benefits for Teaching Centre members.

a video of the speaking test
Network English - produced by the British Council with grammar, vocabulary, reading and listening practice at five levels (Elementary to Advanced)
Tensebuster - explanation and practice of grammar at five levels (Elementary to Advanced)
Mindgame - have fun while practising your English (Elementary to Advanced)
FCE and CAE TUTOR - for exam practice
Study Skill Success - for IELTS exam practice
Streaming Speech - for higher level pronunciation and listening skills practice

Exams Corner - for exam candidates registered with the British Council
We now have a special exam corner with reference packs containing books and cassettes / CDs and workcard booklets. If you want to practise listening in the exams corner, we also have discmans for you to borrow.

You can study whole practice tests using workcard booklets, which contain examples, practice test questions and answers. Look at the list of workcards for your exam (KET, PET, FCE, CAE and IELTS) and choose the skill you want to practise. You can keep a record of your score on your self study plan.

Listening facilities
We have more than 20 listening booths for you to practise your listening skills in the library.

The Teachers’ Corner is a dedicated area for teachers.

Teaching Resources
There are practical teaching and photocopiable resources in the reference section of the teachers' room.

a selection of teaching journals available for references and lending


Teachers' Corner Computer

This offers online periodicals, journals and dictionaries for up-to-date information on teaching English, for example the ELT Newsletter which offers the latest news and ideas written by teachers for teachers.

We have recently added the ELT Journal CD ROM with back copies of the journal from 1981 - 2002.

Additionally, there are links to useful teaching websites such as IATEFL, Teaching English, Learn English, the Humanistic Language Teaching Website and One Stop English.

Teaching Journals
There is a selection of teaching periodicals and newsletters including the ELT Journal, Teacher Trainer, Modern English Teacher, World English and the English Teaching Professional.



Joining the ELZ
Full library membership entitles you to use reference and lending sections of the ELZ. Teaching Centre students and the exams candidates registered with the British Council get a free and automatic reference membership with the opportunity to upgrade to a full membership.

ELZ tours
If you would like to know more about the library facilities, you can book a tour of the English Learning Zone (ELZ) and the library by asking at the ELZ counter. Tours are available on the following days:

Sunday (for Teaching Centre students only) 1315

Opening hours

from Monday to Saturday from 0800 to 2000
Sunday from 0800 to 1630

The ELZ is open on Sunday and Monday for Teaching Centre students and British Council exams candidates only.
