Why study with the British Council?

As the UK's international organisation for educational and cultural relations, British Council is able to create unparalleled opportunities in English language learning and cultural exchange. With some of the most highly qualified EFL teachers in Sri Lanka, a wealth of resources and a variety of programmes to choose from, we are the organisation best placed to help you achieve your goals. We have been active in English language teaching in Sri Lanka for over 20 years.

Our Approach
British Council teachers are trained to follow a communicative approach to language teaching and learning. This involves pair work, group work and project work, and promotes ‘learning through doing’.

Our Centres
Our centres in Colombo and Kandy offer internet access, books, newspapers, magazines, videos, ELT resources and information about study in the UK. The centres also offer a variety of British events, workshops, and exhibitions.

Our Courses
Our centres in Colombo and Kandy can offer you and your family a wide range of courses which will help you improve your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills as well as your grammar. Our teachers use modern methods and textbooks based on interesting topics as well as a range of computer and video-based materials. Our courses are scheduled at times that are convenient for you. If you have extra time you can study in our English Learning Zone (ELZ) in Colombo and Kandy where a member of staff will help you to choose from a wide range of books, multimedia CD-ROM’s, video and audiocassettes.

Our Exams
The English language exams taken at British Council all focus on the learner's ability to communicate in English. These exams include the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and Cambridge exams.
