Hornby Regional Seminars
Call for applications for participants

In August 2009 British Council Sri Lanka in co-operation with the A S Hornby Education Trust will conduct the sixth Hornby Regional Seminars in Sri Lanka. The A S Hornby Educational Trust was established to promote opportunities to study English, in particular in the teaching of English as a foreign or second language.

The theme for the 2009 seminars is English and ICT: using web-based learning tools and resources in the classroom.

The course will be led by Gavin Dudeney, the renowned author of The Internet & the Language Classroom and co-author of How to Teach English with Technology. Gavin has won the prestigious ELTON award and the Ben Warren Trust Prize for his innovative work in English and ICT. Gavin has been a teacher and trainer for 19 years and is now Project Director for the Consultants-E.


SEMINAR OBJECTIVES

finding and using resources from the internet in the classroom
selecting and evaluating websites
designing web-based lessons and integrating the web into your syllabus
exploring the use of cutting edge technologies
building confidence and becoming a ‘champion’ for ICT

At the end of the Seminar, participants will receive a collated booklet of all the work and lesson plans that the group has produced so that activities can be tried in a realistic classroom setting.

This School is aimed at English language teaching practitioners with good IT skills, at least three years’ teaching experience and a willingness to act as a champion for ICT.


HORNBY TRUST
The Hornby Seminars are run with the support of the A. S. Hornby Educational Trust. The Trust was established in 1961 by A. S. Hornby, popularly known for the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary. In the UK, Hornby Seminars are recognised as one of the most prestigious activities in the field of English Language Teaching. Each year these seminars have enabled teachers to develop their expertise and upgrade their English teaching skills. In India and Sri Lanka, Hornby Seminars have been running since 2000 and have helped directly train over 1000 teachers, many of whom have cascaded the workshops to hundreds of teachers across the region.

FEES
The fee is LKR 19,500 per participant which includes – tuition, training materials and resources, accommodation (on twin sharing basis) and all meals.

TOPIC AND OBJECTIVES
Bringing grammar to life in the upper-primary classroom

how to use practical activities and techniques to teach grammar and accuracy in large classes
how to supplement textbook and resources from your surroundings when teaching grammar
how to teach grammar through songs and games in large classes

In addition, the seminar will attempt to answer the question of how to balance fluency and accuracy.

FEES
INR 7000** per participant which includes – tuition, training materials and resources, accommodation (on sharing basis) and all meals.
