GENERAL ENGLISH - MAIN SUITE
The Cambridge ESOL Main Suite exams are designed for learners at all levels from the very advanced Certificate of Proficiency in English to the foundation level Key English Test.

The Main Suite exams are known throughout the world and are widely recognised for work and study purposes. They give candidates practice in using English in a wide variety of contexts, relevant to work, study and leisure activities.

Key English Test (KET)
KET is an elementary level exam. It tests the ability to cope with everyday written and spoken communications at a basic level. This exam is at Council of Europe Level A2.

Preliminary English Test (PET)
PET is an intermediate level exam. It tests the ability to cope with everyday written and spoken communications. This exam is at Council of Europe Level B1.

First Certificate in English (FCE)
FCE is an upper intermediate level exam. It tests the ability to deal confidently with a range of written and spoken communications. FCE is the most widely taken of the Main Suite exams, with over 250,000 candidates every year. This exam is at Council of Europe Level B2.

Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)
CAE is an advanced exam. CAE tests the ability to communicate with confidence in English for work or study purposes. This exam is at Council of Europe Level C1.

Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE)
CPE is a very advanced level exam, for learners who have achieved a high level of language skills and are able to function effectively in almost any English-speaking context. This exam is at Council of Europe Level C2.

HOW CAN I REGISTER?

collect an application form from the British Council, or download it from this website:
         - application form - KET and PET
         - application form - FCE, CAE and CPE
register by submitting the completed entry form in person or post during the period of registration for a given session
fees can be paid in cash, by cheque or bank draft (SL Rupees) drawn in favour of 'British Council'. You can also make a bank transfer to the following account (please bring or post the receipt with your application):
    - Bank name:  HSBC
    - Account name:  British Council Sri Lanka
    - Account number: 001-002377-001
    - Message:  MS- (your full name)
Credit cards are accepted ( Visa/Master/Amex)

The British Council can help you prepare for the tests:

take a course at a local institute. More than 100 institutes around Sri Lanka offer Cambridge English courses
our English Learning Zone has a range of materials to help you improve your English and prepare for your test
past paper booklets and cassettes
download sample question papers and handbooks from the Cambridge ESOL website:

Candidates will receive a free library reference membership card on registration for the exam, with access to Cambridge English test preparation resources 7 days a week.

WHICH TEST SHOULD I TAKE?
If you are not sure which exam or level you should take, our Examinations staff will advise you based on your past English studies and understanding of past exam papers.

WHEN CAN I GET THE RESULTS?
A results sheet will be posted to you approximately a month following the test.
