Benjamin Zephaniah is a figure-head of popular progressive poetry. He writes, he raps, he transforms....through poetry...combining reggae rhythms and Rastafarian zeal. He is equally popular with both adults and children, and is in constant demand internationally to perform his work.
Born in Birmingham in 1958, Zephaniah grew up in Jamaica & in Handsworth, where he was sent to an approved school for being uncontrollable, rebellious and ‘a born failure’, ending up in jail for burglary. After prison, he turned from crime to music and poetry: “I started writing poetry because I didn’t like poetry”. As a reggae DJ, he refused to mimic other toasters with their chants about Jamaican life, instead turning to Britain for his own native patter, comic stories and rhythms. His is contemporary poetry that moves, haunts and activates........
'Benjamin Zephaniah’s poems are short, funny and modern. This is poetry with attitude' – THE TIMES (UK)
This is a Book Buzz event which forms a part of our Animating Literature series.
