URBAN CULTURE

The Urban Culture project included a range of exciting events: a photo competition, workshops and the culmination of the project – a hip-hop concert featuring Azeri and British hip-hoppers.

PHOTO COMPETITION - OLD NEW BAKU
The photo competition “Old New Baku” ran from 2-23 January 2006 and everybody interested in taking photographs could take part. They just sent images of urban areas of Baku to us.
Congratulations to the winners: Sitara Ibrahimova, Lala Fataliyeva, Jamil Gasimov has won full membership and Arbil Boz and Shamil Talybov - half-year membership from our Information Centre.

WORKSHOPS
From 30 January to 2 February 2006 Kelly Budge from Your Mum Visuals was running VJ (visual jockey) workshops for young photographers, independent video arts students, students of the Academy of Fine Arts, members of the NGO Wings of Time and everyone interested in video arts. As a result of the workshop they produced a 5-7 minute movie about derelict urban areas of Baku, which was shown on screens during the final concert.

On 1 February 2006 MC TY and DJ Biznizz ran a workshop for Azerbaijani DJs and MCs to share their experiences and present the latest from the British hip hop movement.

HIP-HOP SHOW
On 2 February 2006, The Day of Azeri Youth, at 1900 prominent British hip hoppers, MC TY, DJ Biznizz and VJ Kelly, staged an exciting and vibrant hip-hop show together with trendy Azerbaijani MCs Elshad Khose and Uran at the Hand Games Palace.

TY is one of the UK’s foremost rappers, renowned for a relaxed sense of melody and an easy-going sense of humour. One of his most refreshing albums is Awkward (2001). TY has won numerous awards and has also been nominated for the Mercury Music Prize for Upwards (2003).
Billy Biznizz has been a forerunner in his field since the early eighties. He has taken vast strides to help put UK DJs on the map, be it in the form of Radio, Club, Exhibitions, Theatre or Studio Production. Biznizz has toured the UK and Europe with various rap and hip hop groups. He has also been touring with TY with his solo album Awkward.
VJ Kelly was visiting Baku for the second time. Her first visit was during the unforgettable Bitches Brew Disco Night in July 2004.
