The British Council has teamed up with the Rugby Premiership and Social Service for Industry (SESI) to bring an innovative rugby project to Brazil.
This pioneering one year project is using rugby to engage with children and young people in the state of Sao Paulo to deliver health, education and social outcomes, as well as help raise the numbers of people playing rugby in Brazil.
In September 2012, 12 Premiership Rugby coaches were flown out to Brazil and embedded within secondary schools. These coaches are now working with children in the schools and in their local community, introducing them to the sport of rugby.
As well as getting more young Brazilians to play the sport, the coaching is designed to help them develop valuable skills in areas such as teamwork, leadership and self-discipline.
It also tackles some of the social issues affecting the young people in their school or local community, for example lack of inclusion, juvenile crime or health issues.
