What is the Business Language Testing Service (BULATS)?
Cambridge BULATS is a multilingual system, available in English, French, German and Spanish. It allows companies to set a single standard for language proficiency across their business around the world. It’s a popular way of assessing language skills for recruitment, training, benchmarking and staff development.

What’s in the exam?
BULATS tests all four language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - but is flexible enough to let you test only the skills you need. The tests cover subjects such as job descriptions, companies and products, travel, management and marketing, customer service, reports, phone messages and presentations.

About BULATS
BULATS provides a range of tests to meet different needs. It tests the four language skills through three different tests:
- Reading and listening
- Writing
- Speaking
You can choose to assess all four skills or mix and match any combination of the three tests – whatever is right for you and your employer. You can take the exam online or in a traditional setting, with paper-based reading and writing tests and face-to-face speaking and listening tests.

How to prepare for BULATS
BULATS is designed to test the candidate’s ability to apply Business English in a working environment. This means that it does not require any special preparation. However, Cambridge provides a range of resources to help you get a feel for the exam. Learn more about BULATS.
Your BULATS results
You will receive a test report form with three scores:
- an overall score out of 100
- a listening score
- a reading and language knowledge score.
You will also be given a Common European Framework of Reference Level between A1–C2. This means that your result will be easily understood around the world by employers, universities and government agencies.
Your detailed test report
Along with an assessment of your overall ability in speaking and writing, the report will contain more details on your abilities (e.g. 'can deal with clients by responding to simple questions') which will be printed on the reverse of the test report.
