How IELTS scores work
- Candidates receive a band score for each separate skill (listening, reading, writing and speaking), plus an overall band score.
- Scores are on a scale of 1 to 9 including half bands e.g. 6.5.
- There is no pass or fail mark.
What your IELTS score will do for you
The IELTS handbook (PDF 1.9mb) gives an outline of what a particular IELTS score will indicate about your English ability.
You can learn about the IELTS scores required by thousands of employers, universities and government institutions around the world at the IELTS global recognition site.
Your IELTS score maps across to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) as follows:
| IELTS | CEFR |
|---|---|
| 3.0 | A1 |
| 3.5 | A2 |
| 4.0-5.0 | B1 |
| 5.5-6.5 | B2 |
| 7.0-8.0 | C1 |
| 8.5-9.0 | C2 |
How long your test result is valid for
Your IELTS score will usually only be valid for two years. Some universities and employers may accept your result after this period, but this is at their discretion. Please note, we can’t issue a Test Report Form for you after the end of the two-year period.
If you’re not happy with your results
If you are not satisfied with your results, you can ask for a re-mark of your test. This process is called Enquiry on Results and costs 83€. If your new mark is higher, the fee will be refunded.
