Misunderstandings and prevalent anti-scientific attitudes threaten current European aspirations of creating a knowledge economy. The public however have the right to become involved in serious debate on ethical issues in science and on the risks associated with new technologies. How then can we find a balance between public interest and that of Government, Industry and Science? Why should scientists involve themselves in public debate? How can public opposition to science and technology have negative consequences on innovation, health and the economy? At the invitation of the British Council and CosmoCaixa, these were some of the questions Colin Blakemore, professor at the University of Oxford, addressed in his talk. More information about CosmoCaixa in Madrid.

30 November CosmoCaixa Madrid, Alcobendas Introduction: José María Carrascosa
Obesity is considered a universal epidemic and represents a significant medical and public health problem. It is linked directly to an increased risk of suffering serious illnesses. Obesity is the cause of problems affecting metabolism, increases the risk of premature death, causes psychological problems and takes up an increasingly enormous proportion of public health budgets. The British Council, in collaboration with CosmoCaixa Madrid, has organised this debate about obesity, which despite being an ever increasing problem is theoretically preventable. By reducing childhood obesity the rate of illnesses in adulthood is also reduced. The present day situation is nevertheless worrying, both in Spain and in the UK the number of obese children has tripled over the last two decades 14 - 15 November La Casa Encendida, Madrid
The Cafés Scientifiques are a forum for debating present day scientific topics in a more informal and accesible way than conferences. The public is actively encouraged to participate in the debates. Following the success of previous cafés, we have organised with La Casa Encendida two new Cafés Scientifiques around the debate on sustainable cities. Sustainable cities is one of the fundamental questions raised in the British Council's global awareness campaign ZeroCarbonCity. On display were both the negative consequences which human activity has had on the planet and the innovative solutions which are being implemented in an attempt to create sustainable cities from an environmental point of view.
