PET is devised to certify that command of English is good enough to exchange familiar information and instructions in the workplace or in everyday communication.

All completed exam papers are returned to Cambridge for marking. The examiners are English-teaching specialists with relevant experience at the appropriate level. Examiners are trained, their work is continuously monitored and checked by highly experienced senior examiners as they work.

There are four grades for PET: Pass with Merit, Pass, Narrow Fail and Fail. The grade is based on the candidate's total score in all the papers.Eight to nine weeks after the exam, all candidates receive a Statement of Results giving the overall grade and showing their relative performance in the three exam papers by means of a graphical profile. Certificates are issued to successful candidates approximately ten weeks after the exam.
