A group of young people discussing issuesWhat is the age limit for youth exchanges?

You must be between 13 and 25 years old on the day the exchange begins. Under exceptional circumstances (severely physically disabled or socially marginalised) exceptions may be made for up until the age of 30.

Would you consider funding a school exchange?

No, Youth Exchanges must be in a non-formal learning situation. The idea of the exchange must have come from a group of young people who have already come together - not chosen by the teachers.

Why do I need to include another Youth in Action programme country, if our country wants to have an exchange with a partner country?

The European Commission has rules regarding which countries can receive funding for an exchange. By having two European Youth in Action programme Countries participate in a Partner Country exchange it ensures that there will be a European dimension to the project.

Our youth group is going on an exchange next month. Our travel plans are set, but we need additional funds. Can we get a grant?

You must apply for a grant by the deadlines that are regulated by the European Commission. We are unable to fund exchanges that are organised outside of the European Youth in Action programme.

Does a bilateral exchange have to take place in one of the two participating countries?

Yes, you cannot, for example, meet your German partners in Italy unless you are prepared to do a trilateral exchange and find an Italian partner.

If we do an exchange overseas, do we then have to host our partner in the UK?

An exchange does not need to be reciprocal but we recommended it.

Do we have to re-apply for the second leg of the exchange?

Yes, we require a separate application for both sending and hosting exchanges.

Are we automatically guaranteed funding for the second leg of our exchange?

No, you still need to apply in the normal way and with the help of some external assessors we will make a decision. It is also dependent on the funds available.
