YOUNG LEARNERS ENGLISH TESTS (YLE)
Give your children a head start with a Cambridge certificate

The YLE tests are a series of exams for children aged seven to twelve years. They:

are available at three levels
offer an interesting and positive experience in testing and motivation for further learning
are a first step towards the Cambridge ESOL General English exams
reward every student for their efforts.

The tests are produced to the same standards as the Cambridge tests for adult students, but are based on the kinds of topics and activities that are familiar to children.

Which is the right test?

Starters
Starters is the lowest level in the series and is designed for children from the age of seven who have completed about 100 hours of learning. In Slovenia, this test is usually taken by 3rd and 4th graders with some fifteen-twenty hours of additional tuition.

Movers
Movers is the second level in the series. A typical Movers candidate is likely to be aged between eight and eleven and to have completed approximately 175 hours of English language tuition. In Slovenia, this test is usually taken by 5th and 6th graders with some additional hours of extra curricular tuition.

Flyers
Flyers is the third level in the series. A typical Flyers candidate is likely to be aged between nine and twelve years and have completed approximately 250 hours of English language tuition. In Slovenia, this level is mostly taken by 7th graders (new nine-year primary school) with some additional hours of extra curricular tuition. This level is set at language level A2 of the Council of Europe and is also at the same level as the Key English Test (KET).

For more information you can look at the exam content and sample papers for each level.

How and when can the tests be taken?

There are no fixed dates for the tests. Tests in Slovenia usually take place in May of each year and dates are agreed eight weeks in advance with the language school preparing the children. We only accept candidates registering through a primary or language school. Sometimes, we will agree for tests to be held on a school’s own premises if they are considered suitable.

Exam  Dates Exam Fee
Starters Dates agreed 8 weeks before the exam date with individual schools €  65,00
Movers Dates agreed 8 weeks before the exam date with individual schools €  68,00
Flyers Dates agreed 8 weeks before the exam date with individual schools €  72,00

Who marks the tests?

Trained oral examiners visit exam centres to assess the children's performance in the speaking test. All other tests are sent to Cambridge and marked by Cambridge ESOL examiners.
There is no pass/fail; every child who attempts all the papers will receive an Award. Awards are available within one month of the test date.
