Active Citizens

Active Citizens is a British Council programme in the area of intercultural dialogue and global citizenship. The programme aims to  contribute  to social change within communities, to use dialogue to achieve community impact through implementation of positive changes.

It works with leaders of youth, women’s’, cultural, recreational or religious groups, with NGOs, local governments, and businesses to build on their own skills.

The programme has three components in Slovakia:

  • Local training workshops focuses on global citizenship, working effectively with difference to achieve better understanding of the local community and global interdependency.
  • Social Action Projects will be planned and delivered by the participants based on what they learned and where they feel they can make a positive impact in their own community and communities they interact with.
  • International exchanges and networking provides the participants the opportunity to experience international practises and learn from other countries, especially in areas of common interest.

Active Citizens was launched in 2009 and is currently running in 28 countries in Europe, Africa and Asia.

In Europe, within three years, we will have built a network of 120 community leaders and master trainers, some 3000 Active Citizens who will have built networks with 100,000 participating in their social action projects.

Project implementation: September 2011–March 2012 (international exchanges may take place after this period)

Training fee: €50

Active Citizens programme is a continuation to the successful Intercultural Navigators project. For further information on project outcomes, please see http://www.britishcouncil.org/slovakia-projects-intercultural-navigators.htm
