Young Learners English Tests
Give your child a head start

The Cambridge Young Learners English Tests give children who are learning English as a foreign language the chance to demonstrate their skills. They are for children aged seven to twelve years old and are designed to challenge and motivate children learning English. There are no pass or fail grades: the tests provide every student with a certificate showing how well they demonstrated each skill.

The exams test the candidates’ reading, writing, listening and speaking abilities, in order to give a comprehensive picture of the learners’ overall level of English. All three components are attractively illustrated in full colour.

What test levels are there?

Young Learners Tests are available at three levels – Starters, Movers and Flyers. Flyers is approximately equivalent to the level of the Cambridge Key English Test (KET), so the tests can provide a first step towards the internationally recognised Cambridge ESOL exams for teenagers and adults.

Starters
This is the lowest level and is designed for children from the age of seven, who have completed about 100 hours of learning.
Movers
This is the second level. A typical Movers candidate is likely to be aged between eight and eleven and to have completed about 175 hours of English language learning.
Flyers
This is the highest level in the series. A typical Flyers candidate is likely to be aged between nine and twelve and to have completed approximately 250 hours of learning.
