The British Council is the United Kingdom’s international organisation, connecting people worldwide with learning opportunities and creative ideas from the UK, and building lasting relationships between the UK and other countries.
This year marks 60 years of our working partnership with Sierra Leone
In Sierra Leone we work with our partners (both Sierra Leonean and British) to build appreciation of the UK’s creativity and scientific innovation. We help promote recognition of the UK’s values, ideas and achievements and nurture lasting, mutually beneficial relationships between Sierra Leone and the UK.
We are involved in a broad range of activities, including law, journalism, television, radio, human rights, education and teaching, business, gender and youth issues.
All of these activities are designed to enable participants to engage with the UK’s values, ideas and achievements. We also work closely with Commonwealth Institutions to advance mutual aims.
We work with aspiring young professionals and learners seeking UK qualifications, as well as potential leaders and innovators. We also have an ongoing association with key opinion formers and decision-makers to help promote the UK as a partner, model and mentor. We also provide information and support to the large group of educated Sierra Leonean, and those who have UK qualifications, or have lived and studied in the UK.
We work closely with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (our sponsor) and the Department for International Development (DFID) to deliver governance projects in law, media development, and civil society.
We work especially closely with dynamic Sierra Leonean women, in partnership with the 50/50 Group and other organisations, to create opportunities for Sierra Leonean women to play equitable role in politics and democracy.
