In the summer of 2007, urged by the changes in British Council’s work in Europe, we embarked on the process of researching the needs, values and opinions of a new generation of young experts in Europe, Russia and North America. The research was intended to reveal motives which are driving the dynamic population of people between eighteen and forty years of age and to look into their view of their own roles in an international setting. Among other things, British Council research has shown that young professionals share similar values and aspirations to a large extent, regardless of the country they live in. That is why we have decided to investigate who the representatives of the new European generation in Serbia are, what their values are and what connects them to other young people in Europe.

This book emerged as a result of the work done within the „Serbia: my case“ project, primarily stemming from the desire to leave a written record of all activities which were a part of it after it has been completed, but also from the need to present some young and successful professionals in Serbia, members of the new European generation.

In “Actions” - the first part of the book - five projects were shown, presenting young professionals from the areas of music, sports, architecture, journalism and design - Aleksandra Kovač, Vanja Udovičić, Jelena Atanacković-Jeličić, Brankica Stanković and Mia David. The second part of the book, „Essays“, contains texts by invited authors, people who have (in their fields) influenced the national environment in various ways or made it a part of a broader cultural context. Pages of the official British Council Serbia website where the activities, pieces of work and information about the participants were shown during the project’s life cycle are included with the book on a DVD.

The purpose of this book is to present successful people in Serbia in different stages of their careers, people who share the same values and goals with their peers (anywhere) in Europe. It is important to say that our choice could have also been different, because there are many more special young people in Serbia. Perhaps a future project by the British Council or another international or local institution will present some of them.
