The Peacekeeping English Projects (PEP) comprise programmes of support to develop or strengthen English Language Training (ELT), for military, security and law enforcement services in 24 countries in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. The Programme operates within the strategic objectives of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and Ministry of Defence (MOD).
The project in Serbia has been running since May 2002 when a Self-Access Centre for English Language Teaching was opened at the Military Academy in Belgrade. The Self-Access Centre consists of state-of-the-art hardware and software as key provision for the teaching of English language to the Serbia Armed forces. In addition, a Peacekeeping English Project manager, Mr. James Sutherland-Smith, works at the Military Academy to advise the department of Foreign Languages on curricula, materials and teacher training for the Academy's teachers of English. The first stage of the project will run to March 2005.
The objectives of the project are:
short term rapid build up of a specific target of English language users to meet Serbia and Montenegro's regional and multinational obligations or facilitate international contact for senior personnel |
improving procedures for trainee selection, establishing positions for trainer trainers in the personnel structure, and establishing an independent initial testing system which meets STANAG standards |
assisting with the provision of short- and long- term functional ELT for specific purposes, e.g. conference participation, preparation for international assignments, work requirements, preparation for international exchanges and training courses, career development and promotion |
contributing to the improvement of the professionalism, standards and capabilities of the Armed Forces and public security agencies, particularly with regards to their respect for human rights, the rule of law and the primacy of a democratically elected executive |
