The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) is a new teaching qualification focusing on the core knowledge needed by all teachers of English as a second language. TKT has been prepared and is delivered to international standards by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL).
Apart from being internationally recognised, the TKT is recognised by the Ministry of Education and Sports as having undergone 25 hours of professional development for the teachers in primary schools. However, TKT is aimed at anybody who would like to brush up their methodology knowledge therefore it’s for pre-service and in-service teachers as well.
TKT gives teachers a strong foundation in the core areas of teaching knowledge needed in the English language teaching classroom. It is ideal for all teachers, whatever your background and teaching experience, and is also suitable for people who would like to teach English but do not yet have a teaching position.
There are no formal entry requirements. However, anyone wishing to take TKT is strongly advised to have at least an intermediate level of English - level B1 of the CEF, eg. PET, IELTS band score of 4.
TKT gives teachers a strong foundation in the core areas of teaching knowledge needed in the English language teaching classroom. It aims to increase teachers' confidence and enhance job prospects by focusing on the core teaching knowledge needed by teachers of primary, secondary or adult learners, anywhere in the world.
It covers three core modules:
- Language and background to language learning and teaching,
- Planning lessons and use of resources for language teaching
- Managing the teaching and learning process.
The test looks at different teaching methodologies, the language of teaching, use of resources, lesson planning, classroom management methods.
