Digital literacies: Nicky Hockly
Submitted by Paul Braddock on 22 February, 2013 - 12:41
This workshop, with Nicky Hockly, provides an introduction to 'Digital literacies'. Nicky offers a useful insight to the different aspects of digital literacies and gives some practical tips for the classroom. The workshop was filmed at the British Council Young learner centre, Barcelona in December 2012. The workshop is divided into four parts. The first part, below, looks at 'Information literacy'.
You can also read a related article on Digital literacies, by Nicky: 'Digital literacies: what are they and why should we care'.

I really liked the true secret of this SECRET :)
So many familiar things put in a nice order with very useful and interesting examples.
I especially liked the box with the mirror which should remind us -teachers to use more of our intrinsic motivation and our knowledge and imagination.
Great job Ms Carol Read. Thank you :)
Hi there
Thanks for writing in. Great to hear that you enjoyed the workshop and glad you found so many familiar things you could relate to.
I very much like your interpretation of the box with the mirror - you're so right that we can draw on our intrinsic motivation, knowledge and imagination in the classroom - children also find this energising and 'catching' and it motivates them too!
Hello Carol,
I am an English Teacher in Portugal and I would love to use these two songs, the one about the fruit and the bananas in Pyjamas. Is it possible to send me the links to these video clips?
Thanks you so much.

nice
I enjoyed Ms. Read's talk very much and as a veteran teacher and a beginning teacher trainer I found her various techniques and philosophy inspiring. Her presentation skill is also pleasant and purposeful. Aboslutely enjoyed it! one problem though, I can't seem to download the handout successfully?
Thanks very much for your contribution and positive comments.
Great to know that you found the session useful from a teacher training point of view. I often find that I learn as much about content as how to present when I attend seminars and conference sessions so it's interesting to know that it was helpful for you to focus on this aspect too.
I'm sorry about the problem downloading the handout - it's a big file as it's full of images of fruit (!) from the workshop - will try and see what can be done.
Good luck and every success with the move from teaching to training!
A very intersting workshop containing many tips.
Thank you very much Ms. Carol Read!

Thank you for this great presentation.
Lots of things to think about.
I enjoyed Ms Read's talk very much as well. Thank you for inspiring ideas, practical tips and for sharing the SECRET...
Thank you very much for your workshop. It was fantastic! I liked it very much especially your way of talking. Everything was presented in an easy and useful way. You are a great teacher!!!
Many thanks for all your lovely, positive comments about the workshop - so glad that you liked the tips!
Although many of them are common sense, I think we sometimes tend to overlook some of the more obvious things when we're teaching and that it helps to surface them and think about them explicitly. Even something as simple as projecting confidence in the way you use body language can be crucial when you go into a class of children who are all (sub-consciously) testing out the parameters of what is and isn't appropriate and acceptable behaviour.
When I'm working with teachers who are starting out or in early service, my advice is that if you don't feel confident and are shaking with nerves inside just act 'as if' and pretend you are! The concept of 'as if' is a very useful one in other areas too. For example, if you treat children 'as if' you expect them to respond responsibly and work as hard as they can, the chances are that they will!
Ms. Carol, thank you for the presentation. I use my internet to see your presentation. I've been almost 7 years not teaching English and now i'm preaparing myself to come back teaching. And the SECRET lies in ME is something to dig again into me. Really true, it depends on ourself: the way we teach, the way we treat them. So...i'm trying to re-fuel and re-energize myself again. Thanks so much for the presentation. Cheers!
I cuoldn't wait until the end of the workshop. I would like to attend your leacturs inprimary school even I hold master because of my english skill. I catched aaproxametly all your speach, which is fantastic really. by the way, english is the 5th language for me!
thanks
Thanks very much for this feedback - I'm so glad the language was clear. And fantastic that you speak five languages too! I wish I did!
Thank you for this great presentation.
Lots of things to think about.
Thanks! I'm very glad you enjoyed the presentation and it gave you things to think about. It would be wonderful to hear what some of those things were ...
Thank you for inspiring ideas and practical tips. I especially liked the box with the mirror.
I really liked the true secret of this SECRET.
You are a great teacher!
That was great!
I wish I had had such a teacher when I was a little girl!
I really enjoy listening to you!
Thanks a lot! You are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Carol,
I enjoyed this talk immensely. I was recently launched into the jungle of Malaysia to teach some village children. I usually teach adults, so I was glad to have some useful tips from your session in Warsaw. In particular, I had a situation of students with lots of energy going in different directions. This was much like your example of students in Spain at the beginning of the lesson, in their bags and everywhere. I threw my hands up in the air, we touched our toes and sure enough, after a few moments, the class was back on track and focused.
Thanks so much!
