Language teaching and citizenship education in international contextS
Loughborough, 30 March–4 April 2003 (event 0203)

Citizenship is increasingly important in school education, whether as an independent or cross-cutting subject. This seminar looks at how the language-teaching classroom can offer an ideal context for teaching citizenship. It draws on case studies from a number of different countries, including the United Kingdom.

A task-based approach will be adopted and participants are expected to develop individual project plans for citizenship education in language teaching to suit their own contexts, drawing on both their own and others’ experience and work during the week. An expected outcome of the seminar will be the publication of a collection of papers covering topics discussed at the seminar. Topics include:

  • citizenship, identities and education
  • language teaching: identity and citizenship
  • task-based learning
  • education for citizenship.

Participant profile
The seminar is designed for teachers, teacher trainers and language education policy-makers working in language teaching in a broader educational context. It will be of particular interest to people working in challenging educational contexts.
