Evelyn took up this position on 1 March 2000. She has worked on equal opportunities issues since she joined the Equal Opportunities Commission for Northern Ireland dealing with gender equality in the 1980s.

She is currently Vice-President of the European Commission’s Advisory Committee on Equal Opportunities for Women and Men.

Her European experience is augmented by a number of visiting fellowships to the USA and Japan, focusing on equal opportunities issues.
