Enhancing the quality of teaching, learning and assessment in HE
Belfast, 25-30 March 2007 (event 0665)

Most countries are seeking to improve the quality of their higher education institutions to ensure that they are competitive in a globalised world. This seminar focuses on enhancing management practices institution-wide and at all levels which are concerned with policies and processes related to teaching, learning and assessment. It includes talks, seminars and practicum by leading UK experts on higher education, discussion and debate with award winning educators and fellow participants with a range of experience in different national contexts, and visits to UK Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.

The seminar considers key management issues that need to be addressed to enhance teaching, learning and assessment in higher education. These include: acting on student feedback, engaging with UK national initiatives, linking research and teaching effectively, leading learning organisations, implementing innovations in education, developing outcomes based courses, applying peer review principles to teaching.

It is intended that by the end of the seminar, participants will be able to:

  • describe the benefits of various student feedback mechanisms and of approaches to the peer review of teaching for the enhancement of teaching, learning an assessment
  • evaluate the contribution of the major UK national programmes to improve the student experience
  • explain the main issues surrounding the current debate on the links between research and teaching and the ways this link can be used to benefit both academic roles
  • assess the value of outcomes-based course planning and educational innovation for quality enhancement programmes
  • use the knowledge shared by seminar contributors and other participants to begin the process of planning appropriate change to enhance teaching, learning and assessment in their national university context and in their home university.
