Stephen Heppell is director of ULTRALAB, Anglia Polytechnic University's learning technology research centre in Chelmsford which has an enviable global reputation for creativity, innovation and common sense - "eyes on the horizon, feet on the ground"! Stephen sits on the British Secretary of State for Education’s  Department for Education and Skills (DFES) Standards Task Force (chairing the Standing Working Group on ICT),  The Department of Culture, Music and Sport (DCMS) Creative Industries Task Force, the DCMS Internet Policy Committee, the Department of Trade and Industries (DTI) Foresight 2020 Education Task Force, advised the "Learn" zone team in the Millennium Dome, is a board member of the Scottish Council for Educational Technology and of Mental Health Media and continues to be been influential in government ICT policy making. He chairs the multimedia jury for the Royal Television Society and sits on both the BAFTA Interactive Entertainment’s Committee and the Department of Culture Media and Sport's working committee in Internet policy futures for the Cinema, Music, Radio and TV industries.

Richard Millwood partners Stephen Heppell in the direction and day-to-day running of Ultralab, a research and development laboratory based at Anglia Polytechnic University in Chelmsford, Essex. Richard's work involves initiating research and development projects, preparing proposals for their funding and the subsequent management of a multidisciplinary and sometimes geographically dispersed development team. He offers a leadership role in Ultralab, conceptualising, strategising and advising on the scientific and practical issues faced by other staff and in some cases maintains a hands-on approach to the research and development in a multi-disciplinary manner.
