Stephen Hagen, Director
Mercia Institute of Enterprise
Professor Stephen Hagen was appointed Director of the Mercia Institute of Enterprise in February 2001. Mercia Institute of Enterprise is the Science Enterprise Centre for the West Midlands and has all eleven universities in the region as partners. The Institute specialises in developing enterprising people, technology transfer and enterprise education in the area. Prior to this, Professor Hagen was co-ordinator of the West Midlands Higher Education Association and Director of External Development at the University of Wolverhampton. Between June 1996 and January 2001 he was Dean of the School of Languages and European Studies at Wolverhampton, where he was awarded a personal chair in June 1996 for his work in the field of Applied Languages, specifically for his research into the use of languages in business. During the 1980’s and early 1990’s he also set up two small businesses. Since 1994 Professor Hagen has advised the DTI/Trade Partners UK on the development of the first National Languages for Export Campaign, which led to the establishment of the National Languages in Export Advisory Scheme and the National Languages for Export Award Scheme. He is currently a non-executive director of Warwick University’s three trading companies.
