Education and training update
Sharing the issues

Manchester, 11–17 October
Education and training in the UK has changed and developed in several ways which have great impact on the work of the British Council overseas. Life-long learning and professional development are established educational and social aims, both for individuals and society. The devolved administrations have or are developing distinctive education systems. Managers of education and training programmes and projects now need knowledge and skill sets which enable them to meet the challenges of satisfying key contacts, developing innovative projects and to stay aware of the ever-evolving policies and agendas which govern education and training in the UK.

Participants will leave the seminar having had the opportunity to:

  • gain more knowledge of the education and training sectors in the UK
  • access information in the UK to pass to their local education contacts
  • gain tools to design, plan and implement projects of their own
  • gain knowledge of other British Council work in their own regions
  • raise their awareness of major UK government initiatives and their impact on education systems in the UK and on overseas work.

Visits will be made to educational institutions to allow participants to set their own knowledge in context.

The seminar will also serve to build our knowledge base of each region and emphasise the need for knowledge management to be a two-way process.

Following the seminar participants will be expected to remain in Manchester for the ETG annual staff conference on Friday 17 October.

Preparatory work
In order to benefit from the above, participants will be asked to complete a number of tasks before they arrive:

  • bring a list of their key contacts/partners
  • identify the key reform issues in their country, in summary form
  • bring a project which they would like to develop over the course of the week
  • bring a case study of a project they are involved with (optional)
  • British Council Seminars will also forward resource material for reading prior to the seminar.
