The sustainable museum
Oxford and London, 25–30 September 2005 (event 0567)

This seminar focuses on the biggest challenge facing museums in the 21st century: how do you make a museum sustainable?

The survival of all museums – whether large government-funded museums or independent privately-owned collections – depends on a number of factors: political, economic, social and environmental. To be successful, museums need to be alert as to how these factors impact on their institutions and to develop appropriate strategies to respond. This one- week seminar is structured around five key themes: advocacy, financial planning, fundraising, marketing and building partnerships, and will showcase successful strategies and approaches.

During the seminar, participants will have the opportunity of discussing each of these factors with leading UK and international museum professionals. The seminar will be based in Oxford and London, with visits to a number of museums including the Victoria & Albert Museum, The British Museum, The Ashmolean Museum and Modern Art Oxford.

Who should attend this seminar
This seminar will be of interest to current and potential senior managers from museums and heritage institutions, regional and national government officials and representatives from cultural heritage NGOs.
