Ten friendly hosts are being sought in Glasgow to host international volunteers as part of the first ever Global Xchange with Syria.
Global Xchange is an exciting international exchange programme that aims to bring young people, aged 18-25, together to make a valuable contribution to local communities both in Scotland and the developing world. The exchange is the fourth in Glasgow, which has previous hosted volunteers from Indonesia, Philippines and Nigeria.
In late March nine young people from Syria will come together with nine British youngsters to give 6000 hours of voluntary service to the local community over 10 weeks. The young people are now searching for homes with a spare room to house them for between 2-10 weeks.
Rohanna Law the programme supervisor said:
'Glasgow has been selected to host this unique and exciting programme because of the positive response we’ve had from local residents and community organisations to past exchanges. We hope the local community, as well as benefiting from the work the volunteers undertake will also become hosts and have the chance to experience another culture in the comfort of your own home!'
After completing their community work in Glasgow the team will then travel to Aleppo, Syria to assist local community groups and organisations for three months before returning home to support their own communities with their newly developed skills.
One previous host family from Blackburn said: 'These young people have been an enriching experience in our family and to our wider community, in short they stole our hearts and restored my faith in young people.'
If you are interested in becoming a host home or getting involved with the project please contact Rohanna Law, Programme Supervisor on 07968 506 324 or rohanna.law@vso.org.uk.
