US graduates are being invited to study in Scotland as part of an exciting new scholarship programme aimed at encouraging bright, talented and hard working individuals to live, work and study in Scotland.
Scotland USA Graduate Scholarships aims to broaden accessibility for US graduates to study in Scotland by offering them the opportunity to study at a Scottish Higher Education institution for a year.
The fifty-one new scholarships are being made available to US Nationals wishing to take a Masters course in Scotland for entry in autumn 2008. The programme has brought together all of Scotland's 17 Universities to offer US graduates the widest possible choice of study opportunities and where to live.
The initiative will also help to build upon existing education links between Scotland and the USA. Scotland currently welcomes thousands of US students each year whether on undergraduate, postgraduate or study abroad programmes.
The USA is the third largest market for Scottish universities, with the number of US students studying in Scottish Higher Education Institutions increasing year on year. In 2005/06 the number of US students was 2885, in 2006/07 the number rose to 3325.
This new initiative has been launched in partnership with the Scottish Government, all Scottish Higher Education Institutions and our Education UK Scotland team.
Fiona Hyslop, Scottish Government Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning said: 'We want to encourage stronger links between Scotland and the US, for the benefit of both countries.
'There is absolutely no doubt that Scotland has a great deal to offer US students – a first-class education, a great quality of life, exciting cities and breathtaking countryside. I am positive the scholarships will be a rewarding experience for the students and leave a lasting impression of what Scotland has to offer.'
Megan Coyer, Slippery Rock, PA USA who studied in Scotland this year said: 'I found the postgraduate environment to be stimulating, challenging, and enjoyable, as we are developing and practising basic research skills, the ability to think and work independently, and most importantly, the ability to share our research with one another and the wider academic community.'
