Ruth Kirkpatrick

Scotland’s and Kolkata’s literary connections were first formed in 1817 when Scottish philanthropist David Hare founded the Calcutta School Book Society. As a continuation of this historical link several major Scottish writers travelled to Kolkata in January 2009 to take part Scotland Kolkata Connections 2009.

With a background in Social Work and Education Support, Ruth Kirkpatrick, the Scottish story teller relishes the challenge and rewards of working with more challenging and vulnerable groups of children and young people. Her tried and tested approaches inspire and foster significant change in young lives.

work tool and has co-run groups with social workers, art therapists and prison warders. In her role of Storytelling Development Worker for Children 1st, Ruth has pioneered storytelling approaches to Transition work, community building and has introduced storytelling into residential care settings for young people.

Applying storytelling as a Skill for Caring professionals, Ruth contributes to training programmes at Strathclyde University, Simpson House, Emerson College and the Scottish Storytelling Centre. She has presented at conferences including Bookstart, Children in Scotland and The Scottish Commissioner for Children’s Office.

Ruth has performed at various Festivals throughout the UK and Europe presenting a range of traditional Celtic stories and songs.
