Over 30 000 children and young people have benefited from partnerships between schools in Scotland and developing countries.

Thanks to the Department for International Development's (DFID) Global School Partnerships Programme, a significant milestone was reached in February when the number of Scottish schools benefiting from the programme, which began five years ago, topped 100. |

Secretary of State for International Development, Douglas Alexander, said:
‘Schools have told us that partnerships have had a significant impact on increasing pupils’ interest and understanding of development. Many have commented that the close connection pupils and teachers feel with partners schools, has inspired them to want to learn more, and importantly do more, about the challenges faced by developing countries.’
DFID Global School Partnerships (DGSP) provides a dynamic way for schools to engage with Global Citizenship by providing professional development, grants and advice to enable the development of joint curricular projects with their partners.
Muthill Primary School in Perthshire and Juliett Johnson School in Ghana, are completing their second year of their Global Curriculum Project grant this year. Keri Reid, Teacher at Muthill Primary School said:
‘We would like to thank DFID for giving us this wonderful opportunity. It is fantastic and we much appreciate all the money, advice and support. It's a wonderful experience to be able to go back from Ghana and develop the school partnership that DFID have helped us to establish’.
The next deadlines for funding for young established partnerships is on 1 May.
Scottish nursery, primary and secondary schools and their partner schools in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean are welcome to apply for our Reciprocal Visit grants. The grant is up to a maximum of £1900 and would allow one teacher for each partner school to visit each other.
