Cityscapers: by the throat

Edinburgh has played host to a group of talented young artists, architects and designers as part of a new international collaboration project entitled Cityscapers: By the throat.

Cityscapers: By the throat was held at Edinburgh University’s Faculty of Architecture in March. It was one of three UK planned residential studio projects and exhibition to be held over the next three years. The project is aimed at supporting the development of the next generation of designers, architects and visual artists through collaborative work on design briefs in UK cities.

By The Throat – refers to the location of Edinburgh and Glasgow at the ‘neck' of the UK – and will aim to explore existing and potential connections between the two cities. With more people predicted to move into cities, the project is an opportunity to think, plan and act creatively to solve problems inventively.

A group of 60 young people from the UK, Australia, Japan, Korea, Singapore and New Zealand have taken part in the Scottish stage of the project which took the format of workshops, lectures, seminars and research.

Under the direction of Professor Richard Goodwin of the University of New South Wales and Stephen Cairns of Edinburgh University, it is hoped that a network of 180 of the most talented city-builders in Asia Pacific and Europe will have developed lasting international relationships which they will draw on to create the cities of the future.

Cityscapers: By the throat was held at Edinburgh University’s Faculty of Architecture from 31 March - 14 April.

An exhibition of the student’s work, ideas and designs was held at the Matthew Gallery, Chamber Street at Edinburgh University from 14 - 18 April.
