The University of Glasgow Faculty of Education was commissioned to research six case studies showing good practice in the use of Foreign Language Assistants (FLAs) in Scottish Schools. They have also looked at ways in which FLAs can help achieve the aims of the new Curriculum for Excellence.

These case studies are also available on this page or on-line through the Modern Languages pages on Glow, the digital intranet for schools, supported by a discussion group and sharing practice forum.

Each of the case studies below are listed by local council and features Foreign Language Assistants who have worked in schools within their authority.

Aberdeenshire Council

Developing Intercultural Awareness and Mulitilingualism through a Festival of Languages.

This case study illustrates how Foreign Language Assistants organised and supported pupils in years 1-6 in eight Aberdeenshire schools.

Aberdeenshire Council

Developing intercultural awareness and communicative competence with low performing pupils in S1.

This case study illustrates how a class of low performing pupils were motivated to learn the German language by focusing on cultural aspects of Germany.

Edinburgh City Council

Developing Intercultural Awareness through a programme of lessons on China.

Foreighn Language Assistant in Beijing

This case study illustrates how all the pupils in years 1-3 in an Edinburgh secondary school follow a programme which explores differences and similarities between Chinese culture and their own.

Developing Intercultural Awareness through a cross curricular project in Italian.

The development of intercultural awareness and language competence in the primary school.

Brest Railway Station

This case study illustrates how a French Foreign Language Assistant has assumed a variety of different roles and has developed a number of strategies to assist pupils’ learning of French language, culture and traditions in a primary school.

Inverclyde

Developing intercultural awareness in the wider school community through a ‘Cultural party’ for parents and pupils organised by the Foreign Language Assistants.

Tapas

This case study illustrates how cultural information may be disseminated to the wider community of a school through a social event which combines in an informal atmosphere focus on the language and cultural aspects of the country.
