How will Scottish Education Institutions position themselves for the future in the face of competition from Europe and the rest of the world?
This was was of the key challenges addressed when Education UK Scotland held its biennial conference in Edinburgh on 18 June.
The event also saw the launch of new research commissioned by the British Council on how international students view Scotland, together with research into what influences student decisions in the changing international education market.
While international student recruitment continues to be important, the conference also examined the concept of trans-national education - the rise of institutions working in partnership with institutions and organisations overseas.
The main themes of the conference included:
Positioning Scotland - to be chaired by Professor Joan Stringer, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Napier University |
Scotland in a Changing World - to be chaired by Roy Cross, Director of British Council Scotland. |
There was also a number of guest speakers including:
Fiona Hyslop, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning |
Robert Stevens, CEO of Education New Zealand, presenting the New Zealand Approach to International Education -What Lessons for Scotland? |
Christian Mϋller, Head of Marketing, German Academic Exchange Service, presenting a European perspective to competition. |
The event was seen as a contribution to the debate surrounding the Scottish Government's recent International Framework and how Scottish HEIs can meet the challenges they face. Research work has been carried out together with the Economist Intelligence Unit.
The Education UK Scotland Conference took place on 18 June at the Roxburghe Hotel, Charlotte Square, Edinburgh.
