Promoting Scottish drama and dance

Promoting Scottish performing arts

Are you a drama or dance professional based in Scotland who would like to perform overseas? Are you based outside of the UK and would like to see a Scottish theatre or dance production in your country? If so we are here to help you.

How we support Scottish drama and dance

We review the latest performances in Scotland and give advice to our international offices on drama and dance productions that have the potential to be involved in our projects.

We place an emphasis on new writing and interpretations of drama and dance and programmes that reflect the diversity of Scotland today.

Examples of our work include:

  • Read about Scottish theatre company Grid Iron, who worked with local theatre groups in Lebanon to produce a site-specific theatre production.
  • The National Theatre of Scotland premiered its play about the legendary Scottish regiment Black Watch in the US, with support of the British Council. Find out more.

Would you like your production to be considered? Read about how we can support you. E-mail art.scotland@britishcouncil.org or telephone +44 (0)131 524 5713 to tell us about your work.

Performing Arts Showcase

Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2007, the British Council’s Edinburgh Showcase staged more than 30 productions from the experimental to the established with a diverse mix of new writing, physical and visual theatre, live art, and mixed-media installations.

From 20–25 August, 2007 more than 200 leading international promoters from over 50 countries – including a contingent of delegates from the Middle East visited Edinburgh for the first time – descending on the world’s biggest festival of performing arts to see a range of exciting British productions, many of which ask pertinent questions about individual and national identity in an increasingly interconnected world.

Edinburgh Showcase 2007, which is supported by the Scottish Arts Council, Arts Council England, Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Wales Arts International, saw strong Scottish representation with David Greig's Damascus and Yellow Moon, a production for young adult audiences from Glasgow’s TAG Theatre Company, Venus as a Boy by the National Theatre of Scotland and a new work by Tim Crouch.

Why promote Scottish drama and dance?

New playwriting and theatre production has its home in Scotland. From Liz Lochhead to David Greig, the Traverse to the Tron, Scottish originality is refreshing the UK arts scene.

Drama is rapidly developing in Scotland with a new National Theatre of Scotland. With no building of its own the National Theatre tours to venues of all sizes all over Scotland, producing world-class work for audiences from across the country and beyond.

Our overseas offices select which productions are appropriate to their country. Find out more about productions coming to you by contacting your local British Council office.
