A new direction
Our vision for the future

In an increasingly interdependent but fragmented world, it is in the UK’s interests to play an active part in building a fair and prosperous world community. Cultural relations plays a unique role in achieving this aim.

We recognise that the UK has a lot to learn from other cultures and traditions, as well as a lot to offer. In the years leading up to 2010, we will explore new ways for people across the world to exchange ideas, share knowledge and learn from each other.

In the arts, we will:

have more emphasis on two way exchanges and mutual collaboration
enable UK arts to be more international in their outlook and practice
reach larger and younger audiences by expanding our work in new and broadcast media and creating innovative programmes in arts education and training.

Through our governance programmes we will:

support those seeking to achieve the internationally agreed standards of human rights set out in the UN Declaration of Human Rights
use diverse and interdisciplinary approaches
provide a mutually beneficial basis for creating greater understanding between people in the UK and other countries.

In our work in science we will:

develop more extensive international networks of young scientists for the exchange of ideas and knowledge
initiate discussions about the connections between science, technology and society, looking at the impact of science on people’s lives
demonstrate that science is a central driver for social and cultural change and an important factor in cultural relations.

Our education projects will develop so that we:

strengthen our vision to have education without borders, as we believe that international learning builds international understanding
build communities of interest among young people, professionals and policy makers
co-ordinate a broad range of learning services to meet the diverse educational needs and lifestyle interests of aspiring young people worldwide.

Using knowledge and information services we will:

deliver high quality products and services to millions of individuals by using digital technologies and our premises with online services for the public.
