Pedro Soares - motivations expectations

Motivation to participate in the British Council Rio Delegation

Besides being able to cover the event more broadly, our delegation will allow us to analyze the negotiations at different point of views (considering different realities brought by each country represented in this delegation). My expectation is to follow the main topics of negotiations, focusing in green economy and institutional framework, and make contacts for raise funds for REDD+ and forest conservation projects in Brazilian Amazon Forest.

Expectations for Rio+20

My expectations are that countries come to this conference willing to reach a legally binding agreement towards a “practical green economy”. We need to increase the opportunities for income generation for those ones who lives inside the forests. My specific objective is to actively participate of official and parallel events, trying to raise the awareness for conserving tropical forests and spreading the projects and activities that I´m developing on the ground.

I suggest that countries define goals for:

     1. Reducing GHG emissions (or invest in countries that can offset their emissions).
     2. Invest in alternative energy sources (solar and wind) for replacing their actual energy power sources (mainly fossil fuels).
     3. Invest in technical assistance for smallholders to increase agricultural and cattle ranching productivity.
     4. Invest in alternatives transportation systems in cities (bike lines and collective transportation systems).
     5. Start valuing environmental services (as carbon, biodiversity, water, etc).
