Husni has been a passionate advocate for the environment and youth empowerment since his teenage years. He has initiated and implemented numerous projects and campaigns with high school students, youth organisations and civil society institutions across his native Sri Lanka, including founding Eco Care Sri Lanka, a voluntary organization working on promoting sustainable environmental practices among young adults. In addition, Husni served as the President of Rotaract Club of Colombo North and currently functions as the District Director for International Services of Rotaract Sri Lanka. He is a British Council Climate Champion and Global Changemaker and an Action Partner of Oxfam International Youth Partnerships (OIYP). Husni has represented Sri Lanka and the British Council at many high level meetings and is working to create a fundamental shift in the attitudes and behaviours of the Sri Lankan community by providing opportunities to educate youth and children on the importance of sustainable development. In April 2012, Husni was appointed to the high jury for the DATE WITH HISTORY International speech contest for the Rio+20 Earth Summit along with actor and environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio, UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres and other environmental activists and thought leaders from across the world.
