DIANE DAVY

The most interesting lives have circuitous career paths. Diane Davy is a former chief executive of the Institution of Mechanical Incorporated Engineers (IMechIE). But her engineering career didnít begin at one of the prestigious colleges. The rise to the top of her profession began as a trainee draughtswoman, studying part-time at a local college of further education. As a qualified mechanical engineer she specialised in the design of small mechanisms. After a career break to care for her young children she began working in a research laboratory designing in-house test equipment and undertaking some research work on materials.

Perhaps Diane's career break gave her a different perspective on engineering, as she joined a voluntary scheme called 'Opening Windows on Engineering'. This successful scheme involved going into schools to talk to young people aged between thirteen and sixteen, to dispel the myths and stereotypes of engineering by engaging them in a live project.

When IMechIE became part of the Institution of Incorporated Engineers, Diane moved to the Institute of Energy as Interim Chief Executive. She has recently made a fresh career change, and now works as a consultant and a writer, contributing to the trade and national press on topics related to engineering, technology and business.

Her creative career path is reflected in the expertise she provides at Chandler Associates. This focuses on assisting organisations, primarily but not exclusively in the not-for-profit sector, through periods of change. The difficulties and stresses of organisational change are handled creatively through business, personal and partnership development.
