Robots and society

Robots have a evolving role in society today. The following list outlines some of the ways in which robotics and artificial intelligence has an impact on our lives.

Practical applications

Robots are being developed to provide solutions to human problems by taking on a substitute role to complete a task that could be either dangerous, time consuming or need a high level of accuracy. Here are some real examples:

  • Autosub under ice
Autosub is playing an increasing role in oceanography as an "underwater satellites", it can monitor the ocean over a wide scale at a cost that cannot be matched by traditional research ships
  • Slugbot Project
The aim of this project is to build a robot with animal-like self-sufficiency in both information and energy

Fusion with art

Take a look at the ways in which artists have brought mechanical robotics and art together in sci-art experiments.

  • Bio-Robotics Choreography project
The Performance Arts Digital Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University developed an intelligent insect-like robot large enough to support a human.
  • Automata - Martin Smith
Artist and Inventor Martin Smith's Automata has developed from a fascination for all things that move. He creates humorous macabre figures, which are crafted from wood and metal for entertainment purposes
  • Cabaret Mechanical Theatre
This is a collection of contemporary automata, (mechanical sculptures)created and exhibited for entertainment purposes

Competitions and entertainment

In the UK, the popularity of robots has never been greater and the science of robotics is not left only to the experts but anyone who wants to be a part of this expanding group of enthusiasts. There are several popular television programmes, competitions and websites dedicated to the innovative use of spare parts of machinery.
