Exploring the solar system

The resources fall into three sections:

  • Resources for Science Teachers – these include educational materials developed by organisations such as BNSC (British National Space Centre ), PPARC (Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council) and NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) relating to exploring the Solar System.

Cassini Huygens education pack - KS2-3
Colour leaflets, worksheets and teachers' notes, which link the mission to key stages 2 and 3.  Updated pack including KS2 material released Spring 2004.

Mars Express education pack - KS2-5
Colour leaflets, worksheets and teachers' notes, which link the mission to key stages 3, 4 and A-level Physics curricula.  

Lunar And Meteorite Samples Loan Scheme
Four educational packages are available free of charge (including special security delivery/collection) for short term loans of lunar samples and meteorites.

JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory)

Saturn in your kitchen and backyard
Materials have been developed by JPL for American grades 5-8 (ages 10-14) providing classroom activities about the science and engineering behind the Cassini mission.  

Reading, writing and rings (from January 2004)
Literacy programme linked to Cassini and Saturn has been developed by JPL for American grades K-4 (Ages 5-9).

Education modules linked to the Genesis mission
Modules developed for US grades K-12 including teachers’ guides and student activities. Topics covered include the periodic table, orbital mechanics and the origins of the Solar System. The website also includes interactive tour of the Genesis cleanrooms.

Stardust mission homepage KS2-3
Series of educator’s guides in PDF format, developed for US grades (5-8 years old).  Includes lesson plans and activities based on “Cooking up a comet”, origins of comets, spacecraft design and testing, plus a series of factsheets
